Gartner Business Intelligence Tools – Two of Gartner’s Magic Quadrants have recently been updated to 2021 and I’ll be giving a quick update on both of them by selecting Gartner’s findings on their strengths. Our preferred Magic Quadrants are Analytics & Business Intelligence (ABI) and Data Science & Machine Learning (DSML) Platforms. Furthermore, three G2 Grids were introduced to add user reviews of real-world practices to compare products and vendors.

My personal preference for working with these products is shown by the three products I chose to highlight: Tableau, Alteryx and KNIME as Leaders, Challengers and Visionaries. The overview would not be complete without at least referring to Microsoft’s Power BI and Azure ML offerings.

The Analytics and Business Intelligence (ABI) platform is characterized by easy-to-use functionality that supports the complete analytics workflow – from data preparation to visual exploration and insight generation – with an emphasis on self-service and enhanced user assistance.

ABI platforms are no longer differentiated by their data visualization capabilities, which are now commoditized. All vendors can create interactive key performance indicator (KPI) dashboards using common chart forms and drawing on multiple data sources. Differentiation has shifted to how the platform supports augmented analytics. Augmentation uses machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) – assisted data preparation, creation of insights and insight explanations to help entrepreneurs and data analysts explore and analyze data more effectively than manually. Rather than being a discrete capability, augmentation is now connected across platforms as ML is applied to data-to-decision workflows.

Tableau, a personal favorite of mine for a long time, has been a Leader in the Magic Quadrant for this ABI for years. It offers a visual-based exploration experience that enables business users to access, prepare, analyze and present findings in data. In 2020, Tableau improved data preparation in Tableau Prep and released enhanced data modeling capabilities in Tableau Desktop, which made it easier to analyze data in different tables at different levels of detail by building relationships between tables. For data management on Tableau Server, Tableau Prep Conductor and Tableau Catalog offer a cohesive experience for operationalizing and automating data management and understanding data lineage. The Einstein Discovery dashboard extension, the first integrated product that brings the predictive modeling capabilities of Salesforce Einstein Analytics to the Tableau platform, is scheduled to be released in March 2021.

Microsoft has become a strong Leader in this Magic Quadrant. Microsoft offers data preparation, visual-based data discovery, interactive dashboards and enhanced analytics in Power BI. It is available as a SaaS option running in the Azure cloud or as an on-premise option in Power BI Report Server. Power BI Desktop can be used as a standalone and free personal analysis tool. Microsoft is releasing weekly updates to its cloud-based Power BI service, which will gain hundreds of features in 2020. Important additions include enhanced analytics in the form of AI-powered experiences, including intelligent narrative (NLG) and anomaly detection capabilities for out-of-the-box -visual box.

Lessons From 16 Years Of The Business Intelligence Magic Quadrant

Gartner defines the data science and machine learning (DSML) platform as its core product and supports an integrated portfolio of products, components, libraries and frameworks. Its primary users are data science professionals, including expert data scientists, citizen data scientists, data engineers, application developers and machine learning (ML) specialists.

The DSML platform offers a mix of basic and advanced functionality essential for building DSML solutions (primarily predictive and prescriptive models) and supporting the integration of these solutions into surrounding business processes, infrastructure, products and applications. It supports various tasks in the data science lifecycle, including:

Alteryx has gone from Challenger to Leader and is back as a Challenger in this year’s Magic Quadrant. It has repositioned its offering by introducing Analytics Process Automation (APA) technology to provide building blocks to automate the analytics process and integrate it with applications and Robotic Process Automation (RPA). These platforms include Alteryx Designer, Alteryx Intelligence Suite, Alteryx Server, Alteryx Connect and Alteryx Promote. Alteryx Analytics Hub provides an environment for workflow automation and scheduling, collaboration, multitenancy and data connection management. Alteryx’s big revamping is a work in progress. The newly introduced Alteryx Analytics Hub provides a centralized approach to managing workflow and collaboration while managing your analytics and data connection environment.

An alternative source for reviews of practices is G2. G2 scores products and sales based on reviews collected from the user community, as well as data collected from online sources and social networks. Together, these scores are mapped on the proprietary G2 Grid, which can be used to compare products, speed up the buying process, and quickly identify the best products based on the experiences of peers.

The market categorization is slightly different and takes a broader perspective by including more vendors than Gartner. As a result, the assessment of Contenders, Leaders and High Performers deviates from Gartner as can be seen in the box.

Follow the links below G2 Grids for other user reviews and vendor momentum in the market. Technology leaders have been trusted by Gartner and Forrester as technology visionaries for decades. Last week Microsoft’s Power BI was recognized as a Leader in Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms. For three years in a row, Power BI has been ranked number one in the quadrant – establishing it as the top platform for fulfilling vision and the ability to execute.
